LD filed NIW 140 and get aprroved. However, we could not file 485 now
because of the 485 backlog. LD's H-1B is approaching 6 years (a little bit
more than 5 year), and he wants to change his job beacuse his current
company is planning to lay off people in May. My question is,

(1) Since NIW does not require employee sponsor, I assume he can change his
job now, and the NIW application is still valid. Is this correct?

(2) If we still could not file 485 after 1 year, and his H-1b will expire at
that time. He could file a H-1B extension since his 140 was already
approved. right?

Could any people answer my questions? Thank you very much for your help.

yes. as long as ur LD did not change area.

yes. apply h1b extension within 6 months of expiration, and normally

As he is changing employer, he should apply extension for the expiring H1b
or apply a completely new H1b based on the new employer?
